It’s time for another installment of our favorite Japanese game show: Crazy dudes in insect costumes performing ridiculous stunts before bad-breathed female spiderwoman belches in their face!

This episode sees the contestants scootering through a tunnel of styrofoam walls. Touch the wall and you FACE THE PAIN. Seriously, who comes up with this stuff?

The punishment for failure, is a common theme in Japanese game shows. It is known as ‘batsu-game’ which literally means penalty game. This usually involves doing or experiencing something very unpleasant.

Believe it or not, this is a WEEKLY GAME SHOW in Japan. It’s shown just after primetime and it rates very well. Although physical comedy based game shows like this are common in Japan, the spandex insect costumes take this to another level.

Pankun, (sometimes spelled pan-kun) is a young chimpanzee in Japan often featured on the NTV television show “Tensai! Shimura Dōbutsuen” (“天才！志村動物園”, lit. “Genius! Most of the segments feature him and his bulldog friend, James, embarking on a variety of “human” tasks, like buying groceries, planting a rice paddy, or catching insects.

In this episode Pankun is hanging around in a typical Japanese office, and asked to look after the place while the boss is gone. He manages to get in a game of Jenga, assists a robber, answers the phone and dresses like Buddha. As you can imagine – all kinds of hilarity ensues.

Meet Jero, who is being described by the press as the “first black enka singer in history:”. This 26-year-old American in hip hop clothing is actually a popular professional enka singer in Japan! (enka is traditional Japanese folk music). I love the completely genre inappropriate dance routine that opens the song.

According to the biographical information on his JVC Music site, Jero’s Japanese grandmother exposed him to enka music, building a great love in him for traditional Japanese music. Jero hadn’t planned on becoming a musician, and had actually graduated from the University of Pittsburg as a computer engineer, but a chance runner-up victory in a karaoke contest led JVC Music to scout him.
